What:  July 2014 Pre-Admission Workshop (PAW)

When:  July 22-23, 2014

Where:  Denver Hyatt Tech Center, Denver, CO

Sponsors:  AAIP and the University of Minnesota School of Medicine

Who Should Attend:  American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) undergraduate and graduate students interested in pursuing a career in the allied health or medicine fields.

About the PAW:  This Pre-Admission Workshop is being held through AAIP’s partnership with the University of Minnesota School of Medicine.  The PAW is an event held to bring together AAIP member physicians, AI/AN college students, traditional healers, public health professionals, and other interested individuals with the goal of networking, learning and discussing the current state of Native health and health education.

Workshop Topics Include:

– Selecting a professional school

– Admissions tests (MCAT)

– Personal statements

– AMCAS application process

– Financial aid and scholarship resources

– Interview process including a mock interview

– Physician & medical student panel presentations

The Pre-Admission Workshop is a 2-day workshop aimed at addressing common challenges encountered by students in the health professional application process.  The curriculum focuses on skills necessary for successful application and admittance to health professional school.  AAIP has scholarships available to college students to cover the cost of airfare, hotel accommodations, conference registration and materials and most meals.

Scholarships:  Scholarships for the July 2014 PAW are available and awarded on a one-time basis.  These scholarships will cover airfare, lodging and meals.

Deadline for submission application and all requested materials is Monday, July 7, 2014.

Who Should Attend: American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) undergraduate and graduate students interested in pursuing a career in the allied health or medicine.

About: The application process to medical and health programs can be intense and competitive.  Majority of programs require MCAT, personal statement, letters of recommendation, personal interviews or more, and will vary depending on the program and school.  The Pre-Admission Workshop will be an intense two days, which will give participants the necessary tools and preparation to have strong applications to medical or health programs.

Scholarships Available: Scholarships are awarded on a one-time basis and will cover airfare, lodging and meals.

Empowering Women of Color Conference and Youth Essay Contest-Due Feb 3

On Saturday, March 3, 2012, the University of California at Berkeley’s Women of Color Initiative will host the 27th Annual Empowering Women of Color Conference (EWOCC).  The conference, themed “A Holistic Approach: Justice, Access & Healing,” honors our legacies, celebrates our struggles and provides a space to build community and share practical tools to shape our everyday lives. This year’s conference will focus on the mental, physical, nutritional, environmental, and spiritual wellness of women of color.  In addition, it will feature a youth speaker from the Youth Essay Contest.

The youth essay contest is open to all high school students.   Admission is free for the contest winner!  For more information, please see the guidelines and application (please e-mail below for file). The deadline to return all youth essay contest materials (application and essay) is Friday, February 3, 2012.
