Criteria for Application

– Graduating from high school this academic year (between 12/1/2011 and
8/31/2012)
– Enrolling in a *public (state-funded)* college or university within
your state of legal residence (start date no later than 9/30/2012)
– Earning a minimum high school cumulative GPA of 2.75
– Pursuing a bachelor’s degree
– A U.S. citizen or permanent resident
– Demonstrate financial need

Background:
Project: IMHOTEP is designed for underrepresented minority students who are interested in pursuing careers in public health. The IMHOTEP program is an interdisciplinary research program that is open to students of all disciplines.
Requirements
Applicant must be a junior, senior or recent graduate student with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.7 or better.
Dates of 10-week Program
May 23 – August 10

Locations
Atlanta, GA; Cincinnati, OH; Hyattsville, MD; Morgantown, WV; Pittsburgh, PA; Spokane, WA; Anchorage, AK; and Washington, DC; additional national and various international locations to be determined.
A financial stipend along with a travel and housing allowance will be provided.

Empowering Women of Color Conference and Youth Essay Contest-Due Feb 3

On Saturday, March 3, 2012, the University of California at Berkeley’s Women of Color Initiative will host the 27th Annual Empowering Women of Color Conference (EWOCC). The conference, themed “A Holistic Approach: Justice, Access & Healing,” honors our legacies, celebrates our struggles and provides a space to build community and share practical tools to shape our everyday lives. This year’s conference will focus on the mental, physical, nutritional, environmental, and spiritual wellness of women of color. In addition, it will feature a youth speaker from the Youth Essay Contest.

The youth essay contest is open to all high school students. Admission is free for the contest winner! For more information, please see the guidelines and application (please e-mail below for file). The deadline to return all youth essay contest materials (application and essay) is Friday, February 3, 2012.

Palo Alto Foundation Medical Group Pre-Med Scholarship Awards-Due April 1

Are you, or is someone you know, a high school senior intending to pursue a career in medicine? Do you live in one of the following counties: Alameda, San Mateo, Santa Clara, or Santa Cruz?

The physicians of the Palo Alto Medical Foundation (PAMF) fund and award pre-medical scholarships each year to deserving high school students with significant financial need in the local community who plan to pursue careers as doctors. The scholarships are $20,000, paid out over 4 years.

To qualify, students must:

· Anticipate careers as doctors.

· Plan to take undergraduate pre-medical courses to help prepare for medical school.

· Be in the top 20 percent of his or her high school graduating class (as verified by high school transcript).

· Demonstrate a need for financial assistance to attend college.

If you meet the qualifications listed above and wish to apply for the PAMF Pre-Medical Scholarship, please submit all information by April 1, 2012.

Summer Research with the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) encourages
students from groups underrepresented in the sciences to pursue careers in
biomedical and behavioral research. Through the program, *high school and
undergraduate students from underrepresented groups* are introduced to the
exciting field of substance abuse and addiction research via research
placements with some of our most distinguished scientists. Students work
with leading investigators for 8-10 weeks during the summer. The experience
may include formal courses, participation in meetings, data collection,
data analysis, interviewing, laboratory experiments, manuscript
preparation, library research, literary reviews, and much more .

Applied Public Health Informatics Fellowships – Due Feb 1

The goal of the Fellowship is to provide a high quality training experience and to secure long-term career placement for Fellows at the state or local level. Participating Fellows will receive one year of on-the-job training at a local or state health agency under the guidance of experienced mentors.

Eligibility: To be eligible to be an Applied Public Health Informatics Fellow, applicants must meet the following application criteria:
A doctoral or masters level degree is required. Qualifying degree must be from an accredited academic institution in one of the following:

-Public health informatics or other health related informatics discipline
-Epidemiology
-Statistics
-Computer science, information science, information systems
-Public health, medicine, nursing, health care, health policy, health-services research
-Desire to pursue a long-term career at the state or local level
-United States citizenship or Permanent Resident

All candidates must meet the above criteria as well as at least one of the following:
-A certificate issued by a degree-granting academic institution in public health informatics or master or doctoral-level coursework in public health informatics.

Demonstrated academic or professional expertise in four (4) of the public health informatics competencies listed below:
-Developing strategic direction for public health informatics within an agency
-Estimating the impact of technology modifications on program operations and staff workflows
-Managing IT operations related to a public health project or program
-Conducting business process analysis and system requirements documentation
-Evaluating public health information systems
-Developing or evaluating knowledge management tools
-Upgrading information systems to be more standards-based and interoperable
-Ensuring confidentiality of health information or the security of public health information systems
-Integrating information or information systems to support improved practice in public health or health care

The American Public Health Association (APHA) announces a call for
applications for the 2013 APHA Public Health Fellowship in Government.

APHA is looking for candidates with strong public health credentials who
wish to spend one year in Washington, D.C. working in a CONGRESSIONAL
office on legislative and policy issues such as health, the environment or
other public health concerns. The fellow will have the opportunity to see
first-hand how public policy impacts public health and to offer their
public health expertise to policymakers.
